I am finding out that it is not easy to get rid of stink bugs.  They have a tendency to show up when the weather begins to get cold.  They want to come into your warm cozy home.  But, just like so many unwelcome houseguest, they don’t leave.

Stink bugs have a relatively long life cycle when compared to other insects.  They can live for up to 2 months.  They begin as a group of 20 or 30 eggs laid on the backside of a leaf.  After it hatches, it is in the nymph stage.  It takes the stink bug nymph about 4-5 weeks to become a full adult.  The adult then typically lives another 4-5 weeks.

The number one thing I have learned about getting rid of stink bugs is NOT to step on a stink bug.  That will make them stink!  Some have resorted to using a shop-vac to vacuum them.  Of course, this is a temporary solution.  Being an insect, stink bugs lay their eggs on the bottom side of leaves.  They do not lay eggs indoors.  Therefore, every time you rid the inside of your house of every bug, more our outside hatching.  We need a two front attack!

Pesticides can be effective against stink bugs, but many have reported that this solution is also temporary.  As the effects of the pesticides wear off, the bugs come back.   Also, some people want to find more “green” methods of removal that does not involve the use of pesticides.

What type of solutions have you heard of?  I would love to hear everyone’s tips and tricks.

Stink bugs are a hot topic in the news lately.  From what I already know about them (which is not much) they are not something I want to ever deal with.   However, they are interesting to me.  I have decided that I want to learn more about stink bugs.  Where do they come from?  How did they get here?  Are they in my area?  How do I get rid of them, if they invade my house?  So many things to learn about stink bugs.  I hope you will come along as we find out more about these stinky creatures!
